How Do You Want To Feel?

“How Do You Want To Feel?”  I’ve quoted the question asked by online spiritual mentor, Danielle LaPorte.  Her work is focused on asking ourselves how we want to feel and thoughtfully opens doors in our minds to explore what it is we really WANT in our lives so that we set “goals with soul”.

From the perspective of our financial lives and especially when our time-horizon is long, traditional goals based planning revolves around what we guess we’ll be spending our money on in the distant futures.  Goals with timeframes say, 20 years or more from now, may be better met by exploring and naming our Core Desired Feelings, as Danielle LaPorte so famously encourages.

It starts by becoming really, really clear on the feeling we’re hoping to achieve when our goals have been realized. We envision and embody the feelings we’ll experience in the life we’ve desired. How will we feel when we’ve reached our ideal life?  What will it feel like to have what we set out to achieve? How do we envision celebrating the success of our Financial Life Plan?

As we name our financial goals and become clear on the feeling we want to have when we achieve them, we are more engaged in the outcome.  It is an absolute life-changer once we accept that our feelings act as a compass to direct our decisions. Our own inner guidance, refreshingly helpful in goal setting and financial planning, is more likely to keep us on track toward goals that reflect who we are over the span of our lifetime. We’ll likely recognize ourselves when we get there.

So, we ask ourselves:

“How do I want to FEEL when I retire”

What does waking up in the morning feel like when I don’t go to work?

What is the feeling I want to have when I spend the first holiday in the home I’ve saved for?

I travel two weeks a year because I want to feel joy and adventure.

When I’ve been successful at paying for my kiddos college, how will I feel?”

A financial plan that leaves out our Core Desired Feelings lacks life and remains un-aligned with who we really are.  We’ve witnessed how easily couples drop the plan, or feel like they have to start all over, somewhere along the ride of life’s twists and turns if they’ve failed to make sure they see themselves, what they really desire and how they want to feel included in their goals.   We are intentional about putting feelings in the process to make goals more meaningful. We use our feelings as a compass for a more meaningful and effective Financial Life Plans.
